    Hafeez becomes top-ranked ODI allrounder

Mohammad Hafeez enjoyed a stand-out week, reclaiming the number one ranking for ODI allrounders, just a day after Pakistan beat Zimbabwe in Harare to secure the ODI series 2-1. Hafeez struck 232 runs and took six wickets during the series, earning 26 points which helped leapfrog him to the top. This is not the first time that Hafeez has been ranked as the number one ODI allrounder, as he had reached the mark upon the conclusion of Pakistan's tour of India. Hafeez has taken 14 wickets so far this year, and has accumulated 732 runs at an average of 40.66, which includes two centuries.
Alex Hales' stampeding 94 against Australia has pushed him to the top of the T20I batting rankings for the first time in his career. Hales received 65 rating points for his performance, which helped displace former incumbent, New Zealand wicketkeeper batsman Brendon McCullum. Hales made his T20I debut against India in August 2011 and was out for a golden duck, but followed up with an unbeaten 62 against West Indies. He has twice been dismissed in the 90s in his short career, with 99 against West Indies in 2011.

If Razzaq, Shoaib Malik or heck even Azhar Menhmood were give the same oppurtunity they probably would be doing the same if not better.

He is an economical bowler who bowls wicket to wicket and can be very handy against left handers. But as a batsman he is totally useless. He just does not have the game to be a top order batsmen. He is a handy bat but thats about it and we are trying to make an opener or one down out of him for too long and it hasnt paid off yet and I am sure it never will pay off. On pitches out side the sub continent (and U.A.E) he would never be able to face top bowling attacks and the sooner the coaches and selectors realise it the better for Pakistan cricket.

We might not but we never will either if we keep presisting with the tried & tested. Hafeez plays with a cross bat which works fine for him on slow pitches but gets him in a lot of trouble outside. Plus after all these years of playing top level cricket the guy still can not seem to judge his off stump properly hence getting bowled while leaving the ball.

Now we might not have a great batting line up but Azhar Ali, Asad Shafiq and Umar Akmal all posses better technique then Mohammad Hafeez. While technique alone can not guarantee success but atleast practically speaking they will have a better chance of success compared to Hafeez. It's time to atleast give more oppurtunity to youngsters who have displayed talent & decent technique.

We have many decent players like Ahmad Shehzad, Nasir Jamshed, Umar Akmal, Asad Shafiq, Azhar Ali etc to name a few. While these players might not get results right away primarliy because they need a little more exposure but they all have the talent to cement their place in the side if given a proper run. Umar Akmal was at one point touted as one of the most exciting batting talent in world cricket when he first burst on the scene but instead of nurturing his talent we destroyed it by sending him down to number 5 or 6 just like what we did with Younis Khan at the begining of his career. Now he is also given the added burden of being a wicket keeper. We dont polish our players properly.

Hafeez is a mediocre all rounder at best, he does not warrant a place in the side as either a batsman or a bowler but he keeps it by doing a little bit of both. A geuniune all rounder commands his place in the side as a front line bowler and a top order batsman. Now it might be very rare to find gems like that (Kallis is one example) but atleast have a primary role in the side. Check out Hafeez's stats and they dont justify his place in the side either as a batsman or a bowler.

!! bhai , currently he is no. 1 in the world. If he is mediocre than how the others are ?

I accept your point for tests but for ODI !!! whom we bring in for his place . Imran farhat , imran nazir , or wajahat ullah wasti ?? or kamran akmal??

If afridi can play as all rounder than why not hafeez ???

Please take a look at the others on the list. Everyone would have better stats than the legendry Hafeez.

As far as who we should bring in his place, I did not say bring the old dogs back. I said we should keep checking out youngsters and we'll find some good ones.

As far as Afridi playing as an all rounder is concerned, at one point not too long ago Afridi was bowling well enough to be picked as a bowler alone and the second thing, which in my opinion is the biggest difference between the two is that when it's Afridi's day there is no stopping him. He will win you matches on his own and he has done it. Hafeez can play a good role here or there agianst either lesser teams or suitable venues but he wont win you mtaches single handidly.

Re: Hafeez becomes top-ranked ODI allrounder

For last one year he is the 5th most run getter. He is not very good in getting wickets but he is very good in economy rate and keeps taking 1 or two wickets in a match.

I still believe he is needed for ODI as his bowling gives the team a good balance. If his bowling goes down( speically with ER ) his place is not justified.

Regarding Afridi winning matches single handedly doesnot qualify him ( or matter of fact any one ) as an all rounder.

However I do agree that he is not the best no.1 all rounder considering past greats but that is the level of palyers available at the moment.

Shakibul hassan being no. one for a very long time and I dont see much difference between both of them
