    India rejecting another tournament

    Uma Bharti declines meeting Bukhatir

    New Delhi, March 7

The Union Sports Ministry is unlikely to clear the Indian team for next month's Coca Cola Cup triangular series in Sharjah. Union Minister for Sports Uma Bharti's decision to decline Cricketer Benefit Fund Series boss Abdur Rehman Bukhatir's requests for meetings is a fair reflection of the Government's thinking.

Mr Bukhatir was in the Capital last week-end to try and meet Ms Bharti and convince her to clear the Indian team's trip to Sharjah where Pakistan and Sri Lanka are the other featured sides. He made two attempts to secure appointments with the Minister but she turned down both approaches.

Instead, she met Board of Control for Cricket in India President AC Muthiah on Saturday and Monday, explaining to him the Government's rationale in not clearing the team's trip to the desert outpost thus far. It seems unlikely that she would give her consent to the tour now, resisting all pressure to clear the trip.

The Board is also said to have explained that it was its contractual obligation to send the team to Sharjah and that it would be hard for the Board to breach the contract. She is said to have reminded the Board that there had been no repercussions when the Board did not honour its contract with IMG for the limited-over series in Toronto against Pakistan.

Attempts were also made to remind the Minister that when she turned down the BCCI's request to clear the Indian team's tour of Pakistan, she had said she would clear India's participation against Pakistan in a multilateral series but not in a bilateral series and that the Sharjah event was a triangular series. But she would have none of it.

The teams last faced one another in a Test in the opening game of the Asian Test Championship in February 1999 in Calcutta. India has not played Pakistan in a one-day international since June 3, 2000 when the squads squared up in the Asia Cup in Dhaka. India has not only scrapped the Toronto trip but also called off the tour of Pakistan.
