    Akhtar banned for illegal action

Pakistani fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar has been banned from playing by the International Cricket Council for an illegal action, Pakistan team officials have said.

Akhtar, who is currently touring in Australia, was notified of the ICC's ruling by the team's manager Brigadier Mohammad Nasir.

The decision, taken during an ICC teleconference on Thursday, means he will be ineligible to play in next month's triangular limited-overs between Pakistan, Australia and India.

Nasir said Akhtar would return to Pakistan on Sunday but insisted he still had a role to play in the game.

"He's a fighter and I have full faith in him that he will be able to overcome these objections raised against him," Nasir told reporters.

"I don't see his career ending. He will be back as he told me."

Doubts over Akhtar's action were raised by umpires during Pakistan's recent tour of Australia.
