    Wasim Backs Shoaib

Pakistan captain Wasim Akram is backing his fiery new-ball partner Shoaib Akhtar on his side's return to Australia.
Wasim has given fast bowler Shoaib, who will play for Nottinghamshire next season, his full confidence over his controversial bowling action, which has remained unsolved but the bowler has also received moral support from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). The tri-nation one-day series in Australia begins on January 9 and involves the hosts and India.

"To me his action is 100 per cent correct and we will stand by him," said Wasim.

The bowling action of the 24-year-old, dubbed the Rawalpindi Express, was questioned by international match referee John Reid of New Zealand after the Test series against Australia earlier in the month.

"The board has briefed us," Wasim said, declining to give details.

The International Cricket Council referred the matter to its nine-member committee on illegal deliveries which is to hold a tele-conference on the issue om Thursday.

PCB Secretary Shafqat Rana said Pakistan would be represented at the meeting by manager Intikhab Alam.

"We are confident that he will play but if anything happens on Thursday we will decide then and there," Rana said.

Pakistan requested the ICC hold the meeting on December 26, but it was rejected.

When asked what would happen if Shoaib was called for "throwing" by any Australian umpire, Wasim retorted: "We will see to it and have plans in our mind."
