Possible 16-member line up for Australia

Shoaib Akhtar cleared for Australia tour
    khel.com, The News, NewsAsia

The Chairman of the National Selection Committee, Naushad Ali informed on Friday that tearaway
fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar had been cleared by doctors for the Australian tour.
Shoaib had withdrawn from the Toronto series against the West Indies in September because of a
nagging shoulder problem and went to England for medical advice and treatment also missing the
    ongoing tournament in Sharjah.
Incidentally, the non-controversial and non-political Naushad had also recently been appointed as
Director cricket operations in the PCB after resigning from his job with Redco, the company of the
Board Chairman Mujeeb-ur-Rehman. The chief selector said he was leaving on Sunday for Sharjah to
join the two other selectors Rameez Raja and Abdul Raquib to finalise the 16-member squad for the
    Australian tour.
Asked about the possible touring squad, he was candid in stating that unless something went drastically
wrong in Sharjah or some player performed outstandingly, the plan was to send back young
off-spinner Shoaib Malik, fast bowler Waqar Younis, batsman Hasan Reza and Arshad Khan from
Sharjah and in their place would come Shoaib Akhtar, Saqlain Mushtaq and two other players. "We
are studying the possibility of sending someone as experienced as Rashid Latif to Australia as the
second wicketkeeper and batsman, but so far no decision has been made as yet." About Hasan Reza,
he admitted that idea was to send Ijaz Ahmed in his place for the Australian tour because of his
record there and his experience at Test match level. "But to be honest right now it seems unlikely if
we will be able to get clearance from the Board for Ijaz."

Asked about the possibility of Muhammad Wasim making the grade for Australia, the chief selector
was again candid in hinting that there were problems involved in his selection because of his recent
    episode with the Lahore police.
"In such circumstances we cannot rule out the possibility of retaining Hasan, but we still feel he is
immature for Test matches in Australia." Asked about the whereabouts of the Chairman of the Board,
who has remained untraceable since the Army coup, Naushad stated he was not aware of the real
facts and would not like to make unnecessary comments.
To a query, he made it clear that at present Mujeeb-ur-Rehman was Chairman of the Board and in his
absence member of the Ad hoc Committee, Javed Zaman was looking after things and also had the
signing authority. "We as selectors have been given a job to pursue immediately which is to select the
team for Australia. That is presently our top priority," he added.
