World Cup: Many hurt as Cricket fans clash

LONDON, June 8: Indian and Pakistani cricket fans clashed among themselves at Old Trafford cricket ground in Manchester, injuring many people from the two sides, after Pakistan suffered a 47-run defeat at the hands of India, eyewitnesses told Dawn over telephone.

As soon as the Pakistani skipper Wasim Akram was caught out, Pakistani and Indian fans invaded the grounds breaking the security cordon.

"I have seen at least three people injured," a witness said. "The Indian cricket supporter was bleeding from the head."

He said that Pakistani and Indian fans thronged the grounds soon after the match raising slogans against each other, which led to clashes.

"The Indians were celebrating the victory of their team by setting off crackers," the eyewitness said.

He said a group of Pakistanis then clashed with the Indian fans and also with the police.

It took security men more than 45 minutes to finally vacate the ground.
