Youhana to undergo surgery on chronic shoulder problem

    By Waheed Khan

KARACHI: Pakistan’s senior batsman Yousuf Youhana disclosed on Tuesday that he was planning to undergo surgery for a chronic problem in his right shoulder that had been bothering him for the last two and half years.

The 29-year-old batsman said two MRIs and an ultrasound carried out in Lahore last week had shown that he had muscle and tissue ruptures in his right shoulder, which required to be repaired urgently.

"For the last few months I have had great difficulty in gripping the bat properly or making long-distance throws while fielding as the shoulder has hurt me a lot. But because of the team requirements I didn’t have time to go for a proper treatment," Youhana told ‘The News’.

"But now with Pakistan’s next series scheduled in October against England I think this is the best time to get the shoulder treated so that I can play comfortably again," he added.

Youhana is now scheduled to appear before the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) medical panel later this week to discuss his injury and the panel will then recommend if he needs to be sent abroad for surgery and rehabilitation.

Youhana who returned from the West Indies before the Test series due to the illness of his father said he had faced great pain gripping the bat in the last two one-dayers in St Lucia.

"I had this right shoulder problem two and half years ago and specialists had suggested specific exercises for it. But recently it started paining a lot and when the MRIs and Ultrasound were carried out it showed the muscle or tissue tears.

"Dr Sohail Saleem who went with me for the tests has said the best possible treatment is orthoscopy where they repair the ruptures through a small camera. But I will see what the panel says after looking at the MRIs and Ultrasound reports."

PCB Chairman Shaharyar Khan when contacted said the board was very keen to get the best possible treatment for Youhana as he was a major player of the team. "We will go according to the recommendations of the medical panel but if he needs to be sent anywhere we will do it and bear all expenses," he stated.

He said he had been told about Youhana’s problem while in Barbados and how the batsman had faced problems even gripping his bat properly because of it. "Apparently he had been taking pain killing injections in recent weeks for it. But I think he now needs permanent treatment."

Youhana is Pakistan’s most experienced player after captain Inzamam-ul-Haq with 59 Test and 199 One-day International appearances.

However, Youhana said he would be going to Houston for the Asian eleven and World eleven matches as he had committed to the organisers. "They are basically exhibition matches and I will come back and start treatment."

Ditto! Even though it isnt due for over 3 months now.. but sometimes these things take a while to heal. We simply cannot affort to play any more international cricket without Yoyo.

^ true. He is the 'style' in Pakistani cricket. I personally admire his stylish cover drives and sixes over mid-on and mid-wicket. A treat to watch.
