Kluivert reportedly not allowed into United States

MADRID, Spain (AP) -- FC Barcelona striker Patrick Kluivert was not allowed into the United States on Friday because of his involvement in a fatal car accident eight years ago, Spanish news reports said.

The Dutch international, who was expected to play for Barcelona in a three-match tour of the United States, was not allowed through passport control with the rest of the team at Logan Airport in Boston, according to leading sports daily Marca.

Kluivert reportedly arrived at the airport without the special visa needed for people with criminal records.

It was unclear whether Kluivert was still at the airport. Logan officials said they did not have information on the incident.

Two years ago, Kluivert requested the special visa but was denied entry, Marca said.

In 1995, Kluivert was involved in a late night traffic accident in Amsterdam when his car collided with another car. The driver of the other car was killed and his passenger was seriously injured.

He was found guilty of vehicular homicide in 1996, and escaped a jail sentence in exchange for 240 hours of community service.

On Sunday, the Catalan powerhouse is scheduled to play Italian Serie A champion Juventus at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Massachusetts.

Barca then faces European champion AC Milan at RFK Stadium in Washington on Thursday before concluding the tour against English Premier League champion Manchester United on Aug. 4 at Philadelphia's Lincoln Financial Field.
