Alec Stewart: "It's not something I have taken lightly"

Alec Stewart has announced that he will retire from international cricket at the end of this summer's five-Test series against South Africa.

"I have given it a lot of thought and I let Duncan [Fletcher] know this morning over breakfast and then informed David Graveney as well," Stweart explained. "It's not something I have taken lightly. I had 13 years as an international cricketer and it's not something you just give away.

"I could have left it until later on in the summer but I thought it was better to get it out in the open now so we can get on with the series."

Fletcher said that news had come as surprise to him. "I still believe that Alec is the best allround wicketkeeper we have got by some distance but there are some young keepers coming through. I think he has got better and better over the last couple of years and the thing that has impressed me most is his professionalism and the way he has been a role model for younger guys."

The announcement means that Chris Read, who performed admirably during the recent NatWest one-day series, will step up and take over as England's Test wicketkeeper. While Stewart would almost certainly like to continue as England's No. 1 until the end of the summer and bow out in the final Test at The Oval, the selectors might not be quite as sentimental and could opt to promote Read sooner rather than later.

Since making his debut against West Indies in 1990, Stewart has played in 128 Tests, the most by any English player, and scored 8281 runs at 40.19, including 15 hundreds.

A very dry, consistent performer for England over the years (and a long period at that!). He'll certainly be missed.

          yep.

The only other active player (domestic) player is prolly Phil DeFraitis, who I think is near the end as well.

A good player, though I have hated him with passion ever since the '92 world cup final when he snicked an Akram outswinger to Moin and refused to walk back. It was a very big edge and even the umpire didnt give him out. Well not too much of harm as Aaqib got him soon with his infamous outswinger and this time Mr. Stewert didnt even wait for the umpire's signal. Best of luck to him & I hope he has not been teaching the other English player to cheat over the years.

Finally about time, he was 40+ and a huge burden on the English team.

Frankly, Chris Read more than deserves his chance to be given a run at the Test level right now.

ye na ho ke Stewart ke age pohunch kar Test match khelay bechara.

Wow!! Phil Defraitis is pretty old, I mean he wasnt the sort of players I would have expected to carry on till this time! Its been 11 years since we won that world cup, and hes still on the domestic scene!

I believe Robin Smith of England still plays county cricket, and I think he was also in the WC squad, but didn't play in the final.

A good and consistent player finally called it a day.

Ohh he has been a great player, who has excelled while keeping and a great stylish batsman as well, very under-rated in my opinion.I don;t think there are many players who play hook and pull shot better than him.
